What is Qameo?

Qameo is a technology that enables program distributors to transfer movies, videos, music or other rich-media files to your PC while you are not using your computer - for example, while you are sleeping or away from your desk. Qameo harnesses the otherwise wasted Internet bandwidth to deliver programs around the clock. It's virtually invisible on your computer, yet adds powerful new capability.

Who can use Qameo?

Anyone can install Qameo and begin receiving high quality audio and video delivered right to their computer. The software is free and everyone is welcome to join the Qameo Network.

Is it really free?

The Qameo software is available for free here. Once you have installed Qameo you may order automatic delivery of rich media (and other) files from us, and from a growing number of content providers and portals that offer Qameo delivery. We do not charge the viewer for content we distribute, although we may restrict the delivery audience at our option. Other content providers may provide content free to you, or may rent or sell subscriptions. Those fees are for the content, not for your use of the Qameo Network. Whether you order content from free or paid providers we never charge you to deliver the product to your computer, regardless of how large the files are.

What are the benefits of getting Qameo? / Why do I need Qameo?

There are two primary benefits that Qameo provides:

1) Files of any size can be easily transferred to your computer. Up until now, rich-media files such as full-screen, full-motion video were too large to deliver digitally to your location. File sizes of several gigabytes are common for such programs. Conventional tools such as interactive FTP simply can’t handle them.

2) Qameo handles the whole process automatically. All you do is request a movie, video, musical selection or other program. After that, Qameo takes over. You never again need to check on it, or re-start it. The transfer will simply notify you by e-mail (or by an on-screen signal) when it is completed.

Which Operating Systems does Qameo support?

Qameo is freely available for Windows operating systems (98, ME, 2000, XP, 2003). We plan to release versions of Qameo for Mac, Linux and Unix systems early in 2004.

Does Qameo interfere with my computer?

No. All other applications on your computer take precedence over Qameo. Qameo only works when the computer would otherwise be idle. Qameo is always available but never intrusive.

Does Qameo interfere with my Internet usage?

No. Qameo always gives way to other internet traffic on your computer. That includes surfing the Web, e-mail, FTP, telnet, and VPN. Qameo lets other Internet traffic go first and only works when the Internet connection would otherwise be idle.

Who can send me things with Qameo?

Anyone with digital media to distribute can register as a Content Provider on the Qameo Network. (Even you!) You may order or enroll with any of these providers to automatically receive the rich content that interests you.

Will I get unwanted spam or pop-ups from Qameo?

No. Qameo has no facility for displaying windows or generating other unwanted communication with the user. With Qameo, you decide what content you wish to receive and you receive only that which you request.

I installed Qameo but I can’t see it. What happened?

Don’t worry, Qameo is invisible. It runs as a "service" or background operation. There is no Qameo window or menu - indeed, there is no Qameo interaction for you to worry about. You will receive notification (usually by e-mail) when something new has arrived. Because of the very large size of some of the files Qameo transfers, it may take a day or longer for a program to arrive.  If you wish to verify that Qameo installed and is working properly, click here.

What can I get with Qameo?

Movies. Videos. New music. Educational programs. Documentaries. Classic films. Video magazines. Art and high quality graphics. Databases and reference materials. Automatic software updates. You name it, and if it is a digital file Qameo can deliver it.

The most exciting feature of Qameo is its ability to deliver high quality video and audio known as rich media. A digital file with full-screen, full-motion video can be hundreds of gigabytes in size. Qameo transfers those huge files by using the 80% or more of time that your computer sits idle (while you eat, sleep and so on) to bring these large files to your computer, reliably and automatically. This enables content providers to offer high quality product to a global audience, delivered automatically, at low cost.

What is not allowed on the Qameo network?

The Qameo Network is a monitored, managed network. It is not a public file-swapping service. You may only post material to our network for distribution if you have the legal right to distribute the material to the destinations you select. Illegal material of all kinds is prohibited.

The digital rights management functions within Qameo allow distributors to allow some recipients to receive their material while excluding other recipients. For example, a company may post a training video that is viewable only by its employees.

Why do I have to wait to view Qameo media?

Rich media requires extremely large files - hundreds of megabytes in size. These files may take many hours to reach your computer. The better the quality and the longer the program duration, the longer it takes to deliver to you.

Qameo can't make the clock tick faster, but it does reduce the inconvenience by automating the entire process. You are simply notified after the entire content has arrived.

Think of Qameo as a bit slower than a trip to your local video store, and quicker (as well as more convenient) than ordering a DVD that is sent by mail.

How do I know that Qameo is working?

Qameo keeps an operational log in its folder. You can test whether your copy of Qameo is working on our network here.

How does Qameo prevent piracy?

Providers who do not want their digital assets to proliferate can rely on Qameo to protect their distributed content from piracy. With our rights management technology, the delivered program cannot be copied or played on other devices. When using this feature, each play access requires real-time authorization from a Qameo network controller.

A provider using Qameo has the option to permit recipients to re-distribute their content. For example, a new band may choose to release one or two songs from a new album on Qameo, and allow users to give those songs to their friends. In this case the copying is not piracy, but proliferation. Qameo's rights management technology can be set to permit this kind of authorized copying.
